Laundry Room Storage Ideas

Upscale laundry room

We spend a lot time doing laundry.

How much time? By some estimates, eight hours a week, which translates to a full night’s sleep.

But unlike our bedrooms, our laundry rooms can be something of an afterthought: a dingy, dimly-lit corner of your home with piles of clothing.

If that doesn’t sound appealing, don’t worry. The place where you wash your clothing can be so much more with the help of these laundry room storage ideas.

DualPurpose_MudrmLaundry1. Laundry room cabinetry

Installing custom-built cabinetry in your laundry room serves two purposes: It gives you a place to keep your detergent, bleach, fabric softener, etc., and offers you a chance to spruce up your décor. You can find something that matches the rest of your home or choose something that gives the laundry room its own unique look.

2. Adding shelving

Have some unused corners in your laundry room? You have a great place to add shelving where you can store your cleaning supplies.

3. Baskets and storage containers

After you’ve installed shelves, you can use them to hold baskets or storage containers, which will in turn house your laundry supplies.

If you want to keep things extra neat and orderly, try storing your supplies in a single container or basket. Consider adding a few knick-knacks or decorative items to make the space feel livelier.

4. Bookshelves

No, we're not suggesting you keep your book collection in your laundry room. (Although reading would help pass the time as you wait for the spin cycle to finish.)

But there's no rule that you can't repurpose pieces of furniture meant for other parts of the home and use them for laundry room storage. Small bookshelves, storage cubes and side tables might all be able to give you the added space you need.

5. On-the-door storage

Don't neglect the laundry room storage solution that's right behind you: the inner side of the door. Simply mounting hooks or racks on the door gives you another great place to store laundry supplies.

6. Pedestal drawers beneath the washer/dryer

These are drawers that can fit underneath your washer or dryer, depending on the model. They will often feature sections, allowing you to keep detergent, dryer sheets, fabric softener, etc. separate.

If you're buying a new washer or dryer, ask if pedestals are an option. Your manufacturer might even be able to retro-fit an existing washer or dryer. Not only will this give you more laundry room storage, it will make your washer and dryer easier to access.

These aren't just for closet storage. Installing them in your laundry room gives you a place hang shirts and other delicate items direct from the dryer. And if you want to air dry your clothes, but don't have a clothesline, hanging a rod gives you that option.
